I am driven by my values.

They inform what projects I take on, what actions I perform, and what ideas I explore.

In circumstances of great opportunity and risk, what we value determines whether we succeed or fail.

  • Truth - when we interface honestly with reality we find real solutions to real problems.
  • Action - unactioned intention is worth nothing, execution is everything.
  • Growth - our efforts to become slightly better each day compound, building something greater than the sum of its parts.
  • Risk - taking calculated risks is essential for capitalising on the opportunities we have open to us.
  • Meaning - by choosing to suffer for what we value we live richer and more fulfilling lives.

My Process

What I Do

I solve complex problems by building for-profit companies.

For-profit because I believe that aligning value creation and value capture incentives is essential for maintaining focus.

My process enables me to tackle ambiguous problems in a world filled with uncertainty. I believe that creating processes which enable long-term value creation strategies ensures sustainable success.

Understand

Every solution starts by understanding the problem to solve.

Create

I collaboratively develop potential solutions in an agile, lean manner.

Test

Gathering feedback about what customers think is vital to making something that people love!

Iterate

Based on the feedback, I repeat the process until the problem is solved.

Problem

There is a mismatch between student expectations and the realities of living in rented accomodation. We found that 9 in 10 students had problems in their accomodation that needed fixing, and 60% had problems that it taken more than 4 days to get fixed.

Proposed Solution

StuRent is an information product for 1st and 2nd year students at Bristol University looking to move into private rented accommodation in Clifton, Redland or Stokes Croft in the following academic year. It contains:

  • Physical StuRent kit acts as gateway product with helpful information
  • Digital key included in kit provides anytime access
  • Initial information developed and deployed by the StuRent team
  • Feedback network to crowdsource data from students across Bristol

Process

  • I developed my research skills by validating the problem, performing desk research and interviewing students and landlords about their experiences.
  • We synthesised our insights from research into a proof of problem report helped us to analyse the root causes of the issues and determine a series of solutions.
  • Testing these solutions with potential users we arrived at a mixture of several ideas, the physical kit and digital platform.
  • We created an awareness campaign in the form of a video and website to test whether this iteration of the product would be desirable.
  • Throughout this process, I both advised other teams on how they could improve their products and tweaked this product following expert advice.

Co-Founder and Director, Technology Lead, Joint UX and UI Designer

Problem

Current education system in self-awareness, well-being and life skills is failing young people who need it. With the biggest youth cohort in human history, 1.8 billion people, scalability is essential as current institutions are failing to keep up with demand. We found that 76% of young people feel their school does not prepare them for life.

Proposed Solution

Merudite is a digital tool for personalised mental wellbeing and life skills education. It offers young people a way to independently learn and engage with learning materials that are uniquely tailored to their personality type. This helps them to enhance or compensate for their unique strengths and weaknesses. It also provides institutions with tools to track the progress of those in their care in a scalable digital way.

Process

  • The initial version of this idea was to provide a place where students could share the content they were learning from.
  • When my co-founder resigned due to personal issues, I continued working on this idea and found a new co-founder.
  • I built a team to tackle this problem, finding an expert in the wellbeing sector who has since joined us as a founding member.
  • I have successfully acquired around £1500 to explore this idea so far, from various entrepreneurship competitions.
  • I built the whole website using Node, Express, Postgres, Bootstrap and some jQuery, and deployed it with Heroku.
  • Website is available at https://merudite.herokuapp.com/
  • We conducted a trial of the product with Headstart Newham in July 2019, and have been iteratively improving it since.
  • For the past 3 months I have been participating in Natwest's Startup Pre-Accelerator Programme with this business.

Problem

As highlighted in the picture to the left, which shows one frame from the game ‘The Division 2’ (released in 2018), the cost of producing 3D assets for a variety of applications is large and growing.

Proposed Solution

A piece of software that can synthesise and stylise new 3D assets, learning from the data which creative companies have stored in order to create new designs. Using techniques such as Generative Adversarial Networks and Transfer Learning, we believe this problem is solvable with AI methods.

Process

  • I validated that this was an area worth exploring by interviewing a number of experts in this field, including AI specialists, game designers and creative companies.
  • As a result of our initial conversations, I am now collaborating with Aardman on this project.
  • I pitched the idea in the New Enterprise Competition and were successful, obtaining £200 to explore this idea further.
  • I am now developing this idea AI frameworks PyTorch and Tensorflow, and using Google Colab and Microsoft Azure.

My Experience

Software Engineering Mentoring

I have facilitated and mentored students designing Android apps in how to solve the needs of their clients, including a non-profit for improving international student experiences.

I provided guidance on developing technical specifications, Spring framework, performing unit and user testing and presenting and pitching their final project.

Innovation and Enterprise Mentoring

I regularly mentor a global cohort of students in how to develop a growth mindset, learn from failure, how to network, how to develop lean business models, and how to ideate successfully. This is part of my role as an mentor for the Bristol Futures Online Course, one of the university's flagship online programmes, which I have been with helping with from the start.

As part of this I have presented for and represented the Bristol Futures Online Course at events, such as the Collaborative Communities Showcase where I explored internship opportunities and funding.

International Leadership Programme, Bangalore

In summer 2019 I travelled to Bangalore, India, to work with Infosys and IIITB and develop a solution to the question “how do we ensure that new technologies benefit all citizens of cities across the globe?” I facilitated an international team creating and pitching a solution: an app to utilise local resources to aid non-profits, to a panel of judges.

I achieved accreditation in Inclusive Leadership from Common Purpose for excellence in this programme.

Bristol PLUS Award

I obtained the Bristol PLUS Award for excelling at my work experience as a research intern, applying myself in my leadership role as Secretary of Manor Hall JCR and developing my teamwork, communication and business skills via workshops run by external organisations such as NatWest Startup Accelerator.

Fewer than 5% of Bristol graduates achieve this award.
